Yet Another Sutherner Signs On The "Dotted Line"

Dear Maw and Paw,
I am well. Hope your are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer that the Marine Corps. beats working for Old Man Milch by a mile! Tell em to join up quick before maybe all the spots get filled.
I was kinda restless at first cause you gotta stay in bed till purt near 6a.m., but I'm gettin where I like sleepin in.
Tell Walt and Elmer all you gotta do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some thangs. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Men gots to shave, but it ain't so bad. There's warm water.
Breakfast is strong on trimmins like cereal, eggs, bacon, and fruit juice, etc., but kinda weak on chops, taters, ham, steak, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer that they can always sit next to two of them city boys. They practically live on coffee. Their food plus yours will keep purt near full until noon when ya get fed again!
Its' no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches", which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so it ain't my place to tell him any differnt. A "route march" is 'bout as far as it is to our mailbox back home. Then the city boys get sore feet and we get to ride back in trucks.
The sargeant is like a school teacher. He nags alot. the Cptl, far as I can tell is like the school board. Majors and Colonels just ride around a lot and frown. They don't bother you nun.
This next will just KILL Walt and Elmer with laffin! I keep gettin medals for shootin', and I don't know why! The bulls-eye is purt near as big as a chipmonk's head, and it DON'T MOVE! Ain't at all like shootin at the Higgit boys back home. All you gotta do is lie there, all comfortable-like and hit it. You don't even have to load your own cartridges. They come in boxes!
Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat. You get to wrastle with them city boys. I gotta be careful though. The break real easy. It ain't like fightin that old bull back home. I'm about the best they got in this cept for Old Tug Jordon from over Silver Lake way. He signed up the same time as me. I've only beat him once, but I'm only 5'7" and 130#. He's 6'8" and must weigh at least 300#'s dry.
Be sure and tell Walt and Elmer to hurry up and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampedin' in!
Bye for now,
Your lovin' daughter,
Gaye Lynn
